Many homeowners wonder if they will be able to impact the heating and cooling of their homes by decreasing airflow into rooms that aren’t used on a regular basis. They reason that closing HVAC vent registers and/or interior doors to those rooms will redirect the airflow to the spaces that are used more regularly. The issue with doing this is that it can be a lot more costly over time and can cause major damage to the HVAC system.

If you want to decrease your energy use and lower the costs of using your home HVAC system, closing vent registers and doors is not an effective strategy. There is no way for the system to detect either, and will just continue to maintain the temperature based on your thermostat setting. This means that the same volume of air will be produced at the same cost.

Another thing to note is that closing registers and doors creates imbalanced air pressure in the system. This happens because you close off the air supply, but the return register still draws air from the closed-off rooms. At the same time, the internal HVAC system dampers that ensure adequate airflow and temperature consistency keep working, but with a disruption. The airflow is not redirected, resulting in increased pressure that can create leaks and impact the airflow (as well as the air quality) throughout the home, and decrease the overall efficiency of your HVAC system.

Doing this also puts a greater strain on the blower component of your HVAC unit. This occurs due to a build-up of pressure in the ducting. It will also affect other components: low airflow can cause the coil to freeze and leak refrigerant onto the compressor; the compressor will no longer function if that occurs. The added stress on the blower and compressor shortens their lifespans, which means you will have to repair or replace these parts sooner than you should have to.

So, the bottom line is that HVAC vent registers and doors in your house should not be closed off in an effort to save energy or to save money related to the heating and cooling of your home. Although closing off infrequently used rooms might seem like an easy and effective way to save energy and money, it actually can force your HVAC system to work harder. For your system to work efficiently, you should keep the registers and doors in your home open so your HVAC can function as it is designed to do.
